We'll be playing quidditch at Sylvan Lake (and in the lake, too!) this Saturday. Come out and join us!
This is a ParticipACTION 150 Play List sponsored event, so there is some cool swag available, plus you'll get to check #30 Quidditch off your list. It's free, it's fun, and it's open to the whole family on a drop-in basis.
See you at Centennial Park between 9am and 5pm!

Games start at 10 am, with youth games at noon and 1:30 pm, and a full contact game at 12:30 pm. The full contact game will be filmed for later broadcast by Shaw TV Red Deer, so bring your noisemakers, signs, and all your friends to make for a fantastic atmosphere!

Well, that was a busy few months! We had a great time playing indoor quidditch at the Collicutt Centre all winter long, we hosted the second Fast and Flurrious tournament in Red Deer, and several of our members went to tournaments in other provinces, other countries, and to the Quidditch Canada National Championship in April.
We also had a booth at Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo and Tsurucon and started up our youth and adult outdoor quidditch programs for the summer.
We are now preparing for Bayonets and Bludgers tournament (May 15), an Open House here in Red Deer (June 5), Solsnitch Fantasy (June 25), a francophone television appearance (May 22), and building excitement for the IQA Quidditch World Cup in Germany (July 24-25).
It's not too late to join us!
To register for Youth Quidditch, go to The City of Red Deer Look N Book and use code 76988 (8-13 year olds) or 76989 (13-18 year olds): https://looknbook.reddeer.ca/Start/Start.asp
To join the Adult group, just come to the park on Tuesday evenings (and some Thursdays).
If you need more information, or have an interesting opportunity for us please email us at CentralAlbertaQuidditch@gmail.com .
Summer quidditch is well under way in central Alberta already, with more events to come.
Our Monday evening Youth Quidditch program has grown this term to 17 athletes aged 9 through 15 years old. The program closes at the end of June but we hope to run some one-off youth and community events in July and August for fun and general engagement. Watch our Facebook page for events as we organize them.
We were invited to participate in the Central Alberta Children's Festival this summer as well, and it was a great event. You can also try quidditch out at some camps in Red Deer and Edmonton, as well as some of the City of Red Deer playground programs.
Our President attended the Alberta Sport Leadership Conference in Banff where she was able to connect with sport leaders from across the province, as well as local groups like PLAY Central. This should lead to some great opportunities for quidditch in the area and for activity for central Alberta.
There are also two more quidditch events coming up in Alberta this summer:
1. Referee Development Clinic - June 20 - Red Deer
2. Cowboys and Dinosaurs Fantasy Tournament - July 25 - Calgary
And the Alberta Clipper Quidditch team are planning to restart practices in July, as well.
So, there's lots going on in Red Deer, Central Alberta, and Alberta overall this summer. Come out to what you can, tell us what you love, and remember to share your summer quidditch adventures with us on social media!
Our spring tournament is coming, Saturday February 21 here in central Alberta.
This year, our focus is to provide a place for smaller teams to play. To that end, we're planning on lots of short, intense games. This should enable every athlete to try different positions in different games, test out new strategies, and just generally learn, play, and have fun with minimal time on the bench.
Following the tournament, we will eat food because hey, we're all going to be *hungry*.
This is a very beginner-friendly tournament, so if you're interested in entering as a team or individuals, join using those links, and join our Facebook event.
If you would prefer to sponsor the tournament or watch in the audience, then join our Facebook event. Yes, we LOVE sponsors! Please send any sponsorship interest to us at email@example.com.
Summer is finally here in Red Deer (never mind the snow mountain that still hasn't left us), and that means it's time to enjoy the great outdoors with quidditch!
We have adult team practices most weeks on Thursdays. Find out about any cancelations or last-minute changes by joining our Adult Team Facebook group.
We're also scheduling various extras throughout the summer, like free youth-only try-it-out sessions, learn-to sessions at the Red Deer Highland Games, information booths (and t-shirt sales!) at the Red Deer Public Market, and occasional community-wide practices open to everyone.
Like and follow us on Facebook to find out where we'll be next. And if you have an idea of something we should do, please email us or send us a note via our form.
The Spring Sweeps Tournament is set and ready to go this Saturday March 29, 2014. CHANGE: Games will be held at the Penhold Multiplex, with the social to follow at Titans Rugby Club. Both are just south of Red Deer.
"We're pretty excited to host a tournament, even with the less-than-ideal weather predicted for the weekend," says club organizer Jillian Staniec. "We'll keep warm by playing hard, as usual. You can't cancel quidditch, after all."
UPDATE: And now we can play safely by playing indoors!
The site opens at noon, with the first scheduled game starting at 12:30pm, and games continuing throughout the day until 4 pm, depending on exhaustion.
Admission is free for the event, with food, drinks, and souvenirs available for purchase on site. "Rough Game" t-shirts will be available in-person for the first time, including both black and green options in men's and women's fits for only $15 each.
Audience members are still encouraged to bring gently used books for donation to Edmonton Potterwatch's Accio Books campaign. They will be collected by the Edmonton-based Harry Potter Alliance chapter and passed forward to a First Nations group to help them form a community library.
If you're interested in playing in or volunteering for the tournament, please fill out the Google doc form here. We'll see you on the pitch in Penhold, and in the clubhouse this weekend!
Two longer-term projects have completed this week, and we're thrilled to share the results!
The first is the inclusion of Central Alberta Quidditch in the Spring 2014 issue of Red Deer Living. We're part of an article about wacky sporting events entitled "Oh, The Things We Do!" Thank you to Jock Mackenzie for taking the time to talk to us.
The second event this week was with the first media outlet who ever contacted us, Shaw TV. We've been wanting to get them out to give the game a try for months now, and the magic finally happened this past Tuesday.
The goCentral! segment will play throughout the day for the next few days. For people outside our viewing area, we should be able to link it online here by Sunday. AND HERE'S OUR LINK. Thank you Kyle Polanski for your persistence and your enthusiasm in trying out something new, a bit exhausting, and exhilarating.
If you're interested in trying quidditch, our indoor Adults Drop-In continues to attract beginners every week and runs until the end of March at the Collicutt Centre.
We are also hosting the Spring Sweeps tournament at the Red Deer Titans Rugby Club on Saturday March 29. You can get further information to attend or play on our Facebook Event.
Central Alberta Quidditch has been making the headlines in Red Deer. Our first media appearance of the year was a front page story by Lana Michelin for the Red Deer Advocate. Thank you very much for contacting us, Lana---it was great showing you the sport!
We will also be hosting some broadcasters from BIG 105 radio at Tuesday's open Adults Drop-in quidditch practice from 9:15pm to 10pm at the Collicutt Centre. We're excited to see the faces behind the voices!
If you're interested in trying out quidditch yourself, please come to any of our practices (announced on our main page and our Facebook page). We're always thrilled to introduce more people to the sport and all you need are some shoes and workout clothes---we provide the rest!
